Famed fashion and art photographer David LaChapelle is better known for amazing music videos and surreal and often kitsch fashion photographs, than he is for landscape photography. In his new show at Paul Kasmin Gallery in Chelsea, LaChapelle crafts landscapes using scale models constructed of cardboard (CARTONE) and other materials. On closer inspection (see close-up pieces in bottom 3 images) you notice an inventive array of materials. We spotted hair curlers (BIGODINI), drinking cans ( LATTINE DI VEVANDE), measuring cups (TAZZE MILLIMETRATE PER MISURE), baseballs (PALLE DA BASEBALL), pencils and straws (MATITE E CANNUCCE), things that the artist sees as by-products of societies disposable waste attitude (SOTTOPRODOTTI DI UNA SOCIETA’ CONSUMISTICA).
The Gas Station images were shot on location in the rainforest of Maui (where Chapelle now lives) and the Refineries in deserts on the California coast. The enormous images, though vibrant and visually pleasing, take on a different message when you spend time looking at the tiny details in each and consider what Chapelle’s art is trying to say.
