Ibrahim El-Salahi: A Visionary Modernist Paperback – 3 Jul 2013
Ibrahim El-Salahi (1930, in Omdurman, Sudan)
Ibrahim El-Salahi is a celebrated painter, with an impressive international career spanning five decades. He studied at both the School of Design at the Gordon Memorial College in Khartoum, Sudan and the Slade School of Fine Art, in London, UK. In 2013, the first Tate Modern exhibition dedicated to African Modernism traced the life and work of El-Salahi, bringing together 100 works from across the many decades of his career. Considered one of the most significant figures in African and Arab Modernism, his work is deeply spiritual and reflective, while vigorously attending to social and political injustice.
El-Salahi’s works are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, USA; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA; Tate in London, UK; the British Museum in London, UK; Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, Qatar; National Museum of African Art – Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., USA; Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, USA; National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia; and Newark Museum in Newark, USA.
