LA GALLERIA D’ARTE A JOHANNESBURG
The Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG), is the biggest gallery on the subcontinent, with a collection larger than that of the South African National Art Gallery in Cape Town. The Gallery is housed in a beautiful building designed by Edwin Lutyens, who was also involved in the design and building of New Delhi. The gallery currently has more than 9 000 artworks in its collection and comprises 15 exhibition halls and sculpture gardens. The contemporary South African collection is the largest and comprises photography, installations, new media and digital works, paintings, sculptures, prints and ceramics. It includes work by renowned artists Tracey Rose, Robin Rhode, Jane Alexander, Jackson Hlungwani and William Kentridge.
The gallery also has important holdings of Southern African traditional art and artefacts. These objects of great cultural significance encompass the Brenthurst Collection (on permanent loan) and the Jaques collection of headrests. The significant historical collection consists of 17th century Dutch and Flemish paintings, drawings and original prints, including 43 original etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn, 18 and 19th century French and British artworks, including notable French Impressionist and British Pre-Raphaelite collections. The collection also includes paintings, prints and sculptures by international Modern artists Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso, James Rosenquist, Donald Judd and Andy Warhol. The 1934 bequest of more than 550 prints from Howard Pim forms the nucleus of the gallery’s print collections, which currently boast more than 3 000 pieces. It contains work by Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Honoré Daumier, Francisco Goya, James Whistler and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, amongst many others.
